COURSE DESCRIPTION
What are the names of the God of Israel and what do they mean in the language of the Bible, Hebrew? In this course, we will study the names of God as revealed in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. The course will make use of Biblical Hebrew to aid our understating of the unseen realm, the divine council, as well as the eternal essence of God and His work in the history of salvation. In this course, we discuss the following divine names: El, Elohim, El Elyon, Tetragrammaton, El Elohe Israel, El Olam, El Roi, Lord of Hosts, Lord our Sanctifier. Some theological issues that will be discussed include the following: (1) What does the Semitic term Elohim tell us about God and the unseen world? (2) How should God’s names be pronounced? (3) What does it mean to “call on God’s name in vain” in Hebrew? (4) What do the ancient Near Eastern religious traditions reveal us about the faith of Israel? (5) How do the names of God shape our relationship with Him? The course will also incorporate apologetics as we meditate on how we can worship the God of Israel “in the Spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). NO Prior knowledge of Hebrew is required.
